Three Ways to Make a Cafe Breve

If you have been around awhile you have come to know (and hopefully love) our Monday K-cup coffee recipes.  I love fun, easy to make coffee drinks. They are a simple indulgence that can usually be made with ingredients already in your kitchen.  There will be no running to the local coffee shop around here, no sir, we have Keurig’s in our kitchen that make these recipes easy peasy.

Up this week…Cafe Breve.

Cafe Breve is an indulgent treat that you probably want to save for special occasions.  There are only two ingredients; half and half and espresso. Anything with half and half as an ingredient is going to be high in calories but, oh so worth it!  If Cafe Breve were to become your daily coffee, you may need to invest in larger pants. Remember people, everything in moderation!

If you are familiar with Cafe Latte you are probably thinking this is pretty much the same thing and you would be correct except that Cafe Latte is made with milk.

Cafe Breve is so simple to make…

You will need:

Half and half

Espresso or a Dark Magic extra bold Kcup coffee

There are several ways to prepare a Cafe Breve depending on the equipment you have.

The traditional way is to heat the half and half with a steam wand and of course prepare the espresso in a high pressure machine. I unfortunately am not privileged enough to own an espresso machine but, my birthday is coming soon and this one just so happens to be sitting on my Amazon wish list:

Cuisinart Espresso Machine

Cuisinart EM-100 1000-Watt 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel

It is made by Cuisinart, it is compact and oh so beautiful, I dream about it on pretty much a daily basis!  I am impressed with not only the appearance, function and rave reviews of this piece of machinery but, it is also very moderately priced at under $150 and it ships free with Prime, happy birthday to me?!

The second option for preparing a Cafe Breve would be with a stove top espresso maker which I do happen to have and love! There is something about the old world look of a stove top espresso maker.  I am drawn to the simplicity and the quality of espresso it produces is bar none.  I have this tiny, cheapo that suits me just fine!

And to froth my milk I use either a blender (yes it works great- sorry baristas I know you will hate that!) or my handheld battery operated frother:

battery operated milk frother

Ikea Cordless Milk Frother / Foamer

And last but certainly not least, you can prepare a Cafe Breve using your Keurig brewer! This is of course my favorite way to prepare any coffee drink, it is easy and cost-effective… what could be better?!

Heat and froth the half and half using either a steam wand, microwave and milk frother or microwave and blender. Prepare your espresso using either a high pressure espresso machine, a stove top espresso maker or a Keurig brewer.  If you are using a Keurig brewer choose a dark roast, extra bold Kcup coffee and brew on the lowest water setting.

Slowly pour the heated and frother half and half into your prepared espresso.  Use enough half and half to suit your preferred taste.

The results of any way you choose to prepare a Cafe Breve will be a rich and creamy espresso delight!  The sweet tastes from the half and half play on the bitterness of the espresso for a wonderful combination! Enjoy!
