The Health Benefits of Coffee

The Health Benefits of Coffee

Antioxidant seems to be the buzzword in recent years. Those of us concerned with increasing our intake are washing handfuls of blueberries down with green tea on a regular basis. All the while one of the best sources of antioxidants is right under our noses…literally.  Coffee!

Heavens to betsy…my precious cup of joe is good for me?!

Not only is coffee packed full of antioxidants but, it is rich in b vitamins, potassium and manganese. All of these nutrients combine to provide an array of amazing health benefits including:

1-Coffee can help fight depression by releasing dopamine to the brain.  According to research regular coffee drinkers are 10% less likely to be depressed.

2-Aids in liver function.  The risk of developing cirrhosis is significantly lower for coffee lovers.

3-The antioxidants in your favorite java may reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s by preventing damage to brain cells.

4-Caffeine increases metabolism and stamina during exercise. But, don’t think you will find the same results with soda, it’s all about the naturally occurring caffeine in coffee.

5-Your skin will thank you for your daily cup.  Coffee can help reduce the signs of aging and may even aid in the prevention of skin cancer according to a study done at Rutgers University.

6- Coffee has been proven to reduce the risk of prostate and endometrial cancer.

7-Drink coffee before you put on those daisy dukes- it can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

In addition, I truly believe that coffee is one of life’s simple pleasures. Carving out that moment of time each day to enjoy something just for you will do wonders for your well-being.

P.S. Remember, everything in moderation too much of anything can be harmful to your health.

Are Keurig Kcup Coffees Gluten Free?

gluten free coffee

Gluten has been a recent topic of discussion in my household.  At this point it is a simple curiosity, we have not taken the plunge to a gluten-free diet. However, we are becoming more aware and beginning to notice that it is in well…pretty much everything.  This of course has me wondering, are Keurig Kcup coffees gluten-free?

You may have noticed that the packaging of Keurig Kcup coffee really does not tell you much about the nutritional value.  That is because there quite frankly isn’t much to tell. In addition, products that do not state any claims such as “gluten-free”, “sodium free” etc. and have no nutritional impact are not required to include the standard nutritional facts on their packaging.  To prove this I sought out a Kcup label and found nothin’ but a bunch of zeros:

Although I was quite sure that this answered my gluten question, I looked for further confirmation from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters since they are the ultimate authority on Kcups.  I found this excerpt on their FAQ page:

Question
Do any of your K-Cup packs contain gluten?
Answer
All of the coffees offered in K-Cup® packs are gluten and gluten by product-free. The Café Escapes French Vanilla Café-au-Lait K-Cup® pack contains small amounts of wheat. The Timothy’s Lemon Blueberry Tea K-Cup® pack contains malted oats.

There you have it, Keurig Kcup coffees and teas are gluten-free- yay!

I am completely comfortable with advising consumers avoiding gluten to drink up and enjoy Keurig Kcup regular, decaf, flavored coffees and teas.  However, I would like to offer two areas of caution:

First, there are more and more renegade “Kcups” on the market.  These are not sanctioned by Keurig or approved for use in their brewers.  If it does not have the Keurig approved seal, I nor Keurig can speak to its contents.

Look for the seal people, it’s the only way to get the real thing!

keurig seal of approval

Second, Keurig = variety = new Kcups constantly.  It seems like every time I check my email there is an announcement of a brand new innovative Kcup coffee, tea or beverage.  With this comes new ingredients and process’.  I would strongly advise you to confirm that each new Kcup you try falls under the gluten-free rule. You are completely safe with regular, decaf or flavored coffees and tea.  When it comes to anything that has a creamy body or sweetness such as Brew Over Ice, you should confirm the nutritional contents.

In conclusion, those of you trying or needing to eliminate gluten from your diet, you do not have to sacrifice when it comes to your morning coffee. You can still enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures fresh, gourmet coffee!

Coffee and Dessert Pairings

Coffee and dessert pairings

Peanut butter and jelly, eggs and bacon, dessert and coffee.  There are just some things that go together.  I for one enjoy a decadent dessert far more with a great cup of coffee. Coffee flavor just seems to be the icing on the cake (no pun intended), makes it taste that much better and adds to the sweet tooth satisfaction!

But, did you know that certain coffee pair better with different types of desserts? Dessert is one thing you want to get just right.  Let us help you make it perfect by choosing the best coffee to enjoy with your favorite treat.

Light roast coffees will enhance the flavors of:

-Light cakes and cookies such as Angel Food Cake

-Cooked fruit desserts such as  lemon pie, compote, meringue or peach and apple cobbler.

-Fresh fruit desserts such as tarts or shortcake.

We recommend Green Mountain Breakfast Blend Keurig Kcup coffee with these desserts.

Medium roast coffees should be paired with:

-Desserts that are creamy and light in texture such as, creme brulee, tiramisu and flan.

-Chocolate cake

-Spiced desserts such as carrot cake or apple pie.

-Cannoli and cheesecakes that are on the lighter side.

Green Mountain Colombian Fair Trade Select would be a good choice with these desserts.

Dark Roast coffees combine well with:

-Coffee flavored desserts such as espresso gelato or mocha cake.

-Biscotti

-Dark chocolate

-Sweet breads, croissants and bread pudding

-Dense cheesecake

-Rich chocolate truffles and mousse

-Desserts containing caramel or nuts

Green Mountain Dark Magic extra bold Kcup coffee would taste amazing with these dishes.

I hope this help take your desserts up just one more delicious notch.  Do me a favor everyone…indulge a little, life is too short not too : )

How Many Calories are in a Keurig Kcup?

how many calories are in a keurig kcup

This post was inspired by a customer inquiry that got me thinking… do consumers know that most Keurig Kcups are calorie and sugar-free?

Yep. that’s right, no need to worry.  The majority of Keurig Kcups are simply coffee and a filter, nothing added.  Since ground coffee is calorie free so are Keurig Kcups.  At first I could not understand the confusion on this subject.  Then I read the descriptions of some of the coffees.

Caramel Vanilla Cream reads:

A light roast, flavored Kcup coffee with a traditional French Vanilla flavor taken up a notch by the addition of buttery caramel and hints of brown sugar!

Chocolate Glazed Donut:

Chocolate Glazed Donut is a combo that’s hard to resist. A fresh chocolate donut, topped with a sweet, sugar glaze, dunked into your mug.

Who wouldn’t think that these coffees are filled with sugar, fat and calories?!  If I did not know better, I certainly would question it.  When you read the descriptions of Keurig Kcups or any coffee for that matter, know that the author is simply describing the hints of flavor that they detect in the coffee, not the actual ingredients. If you still aren’t sure, look for nutritional information. Or I should say lack there of. If there are no ingredients or nutritional information is listed it means that it only contains coffee and you are good to go!

There are a few Keurig Kcups that DO contain calories.  They fall under two categories. Brew Over Ice teas and coffees (except Twinings) and Cafe Escapes. Keurig has kept those around 60 calories each.Cafe Escapes nutrional information

When in doubt consider the consistency of the coffee.  If it is creamy- it contains calories and most likely sugar.  If it is a simple black coffee, calories are not an issue.

Keurig Kcups are a part of my everyday world and have been for many years. Sometimes I don’t see things from your perspective.  I hope to answer any questions that you might be wondering to yourself. But, by all means, please ask.  I need your help in making sure that everyone is happy and confident with their Keurig Kcup choices!

Where to Find the Best Variety of Keurig Kcup Coffee

most popular kcup coffees

Ask anybody what the best feature of using a Keurig Kcup brewer is and you are bound to hear variety as a very popular answer.  The entire premise of this single serve system is that everyone in your household or office gets THEIR perfect cup of coffee or tea (in under 60 seconds of course!).

On top of that you can suit your personal taste preferences throughout the day. For example right now I enjoy 2 cups of Golden French Toast every morning, Green Tea with Pomegranate throughout the day and a Sumatran Reserve in the afternoon. In addition I have the privilege of trying a new Kcup every week for our Friday coffee reviews. I love having access to a HUGE variety of Keurig Kcups and teas (it’s who you know, right?)!

Here I am relishing in the variety, trying different coffee flavors and roasts constantly yet,  I hear complaints from friend, relatives and readers. They are purchasing their Kcups at retail and grocery stores and can not find their favorite Kcups or the selection they are presented with is poor.  Why?

I spent some time pondering this and while perusing the aisles of Target this weekend it dawned on me- shelf space.  If you have ever worked in retail you know that shelf space is a very valuable piece of real estate. The problem is, Kcups take up a tremendous amount of this hot commodity.  Retailers have tried to combat this problem by selling a smaller Kcup box (12 or 18 count) to try to cram as many different Kcups into the small amount of space they have.

Kcups for sale in retail store

With over 150 different coffees, teas and specialty beverages available it is impossible to provide a decent selection with limited display space. Therefore, retailers will choose what they perceive as the most marketable coffees but, what if that does not include your favorite.  None of my daily Kcups were available at any of the retailers I visited recently.

Dont worry though, we have a solution!  Online retailers.  There are no shelf space issues, no perceived best sellers, no smaller boxes, no pressure from manufacturers to be placed at eye level, nothing but a warehouse full of a massive selection of Keurig Kcup coffee, purchased in bulk, with minimal handling to keep costs down.

Just compare this small portion of our warehouse to a retail shelf:

Huge inventory of Keurig Kcups

huge inventory of kcup coffee

It is abundantly clear to me now, I don’t know why the answer did not dawn on me sooner because it is quite honestly common sense.

You will always find the best variety of Keurig Kcup coffee  with an online distributor, period.

What is an Extra Bold Keurig Kcup?

extra bold Keurig Kcup coffeeThere are a growing number of Keurig Kcups labeled “extra bold”.  As a matter of fact our entire line of Tully’s Kcups are now extra bold in addition to our tried and true favorites such as Dark Magic and Newman’s Special Blend.  Extra bold Keurig Kcup coffees are growing in popularity and rapidly becoming best sellers.

But, what the heck does extra bold mean?

First, I will tell you what it does not mean.  It does not mean dark roast.  It does not mean burnt and bitter. This is a common misconception.  There are a variety of extra bold Kcup coffees available.  They range from light, medium and dark roasts. Included are Tully’s Breakfast Blend which is a light roast and our newest addition Tully’s Hawaiian Blend which is a medium roast.  Both very smooth, both lack any burnt or bitter taste.

Extra bold simply means more coffee.

Extra bold Keurig Kcups contain slightly more coffee than regular Kcups resulting in a stronger brewed coffee.  I was curious as to exactly how much more coffee we are talking about so I conducted an experiment.  I.E.,  I ripped the lids off a regular and an extra bold Kcups, poured the coffee on the counter and took a picture.

extra bold vs regular keurig kcup coffee

I was really surprised at the difference. There was  quite a bit more coffee in the extra bold Kcup! This explains why I like them so much… I love a “thick” cup of coffee- not necessarily dark or even super strong I just like a nice body to and extra bolds never disappoint.

My dream is that one day all Kcups will be available in both regular and extra bold to satisfy both ends of the spectrum Green Mountain if you are reading this , please place my request : )

Extra bold coffees are perfect for filling a large cup or a travel mug but, they are key to making a good cup of iced coffee. The extra coffee allows them to avoid tasting watered down by all of the ice.

Have you tried any extra bold Keurig Kcups? Please share your thoughts.
