Keurig Kcup Coffee Review- Newman’s Special Blend

Back by popular demand- Friday Kcup reviews! Every Friday at Cross Country Cafe we host a flavor review.  Let’s face it the selection of K-cups we have to choose from is huge,  how do you pick the right one?  Who wants to buy an entire box and not like it?! Our goal is to describe how the coffee or tea tastes in simple layman’s terms so that you can determine if it suits your preferences. Let’s get to the review, up this week…Newman’s Own Special Blend.

Newman's Special Blend Keurig Kcup coffee

Newman’s Special Blend is a medium roast, extra bold Keurig Kcup coffee brought to us by the authority on organic foods…Newman’s Own. In addition to being organic this coffee is also Fair Trade certified.

I chose to review Special Blend this week for purely selfish reasons. My latest quest in self improvement is to introduce organic products into our household. Let me start from the beginning.  I have had an inner turmoil for years regarding the source, ingredients and processes involved in creating my food and beverage choices.

By inner turmoil I mean, I am cheap.

There are no if’s, and’s or but’s about it, organic goods are much more expensive than “regular” items. But, lately I have been thinking isn’t the health of the environment, myself and my family worth a few extra bucks? That is a conversation for a different day because, good news…Newman’s Special Blend is priced the same as it’s main stream counterparts! This left  me with high hopes of adding an organic coffee to my repertoire.

I chose to brew this Kcup on the highest water setting of my Keurig.  Being an extra bold coffee, I felt that it would be able to hold up well to the higher amount of water.

The result was a really nice, dark coffee with no translucency just begging for a dash of cream!

Newman's Special Blend extra bold, medium roast Keurig Kcup coffee

As you would guess from the beautiful appearance of this coffee, the body is smooth and creamy. There is a bit of a tangy taste with the first sip that finishes nicely on the back the tongue adding an interesting dimension.  Earthy is a term that comes to mind.  Despite being a medium roast, there is a slight hint of the famous burnt taste associated with a darker roast…but, just a hint, not enough to turn a medium roast drinker away. Newman’s is a heavy, satisfying coffee.

Little do you know,  you have probably enjoyed a cup or two of this roast without even realizing it.  Newman’s is the exclusive coffee supplier of all Mcdonald’s restaurants!

I would highly recommend this organic Kcup coffee to medium and dark roast drinkers. If light roast and flavored coffees are your preference, this is probably not the one for you.

P.S. Brew this over ice for a Mcdonalds iced coffee at home!

Celestial Seasonings is a true cinderella story.  Started in 1969 by a group that had a passion for health and a strong belief in their product.  The first ingredients were harvested and dried by hand to create unique, flavorful teas.  Since then the story has changed quite a bit. Celestial Seasonings is now one of the largest specialty tea manufacturers in the United States, sourcing their ingredients from over 35 countries.  They have gone from hand picking specialty ingredients to serving 1.6 billion cups of tea every single day!

Celestial Seasoning is well-known for their inventive flavors some of the most popular include; Sleepytime, Tension Tamer and Lemon Zinger, you name an issue they have a tea to help with all natural ingredients.

Gloria Jeans Keurig Kcup coffee

Gloria Jeans is perhaps most famous for their mall kiosks.  I for one am always pleased when I see one and know that I can get a great cup of coffee!  But, they are more than a mall kiosk, they also have free-standing coffee shops and of course they are a Keurig Kcup roaster!

Gloria Jeans Kcup coffee consists of three different brands, Gloria Jeans , Coffee People and Diedrich.

The third brand that falls under the Gloria Jeans Kcup umbrella is Diedrich.  We are absolutely thrilled with this line of “value priced Kcups”.  As you can tell Gloria Jeans is quite an innovative company, they created  Diedrich in order to provide a quality Kcup at a VERY competitive price.  This allows us to offer consumers an alternative when cost savings is the goal.  There are three roasts available:

Keurig Kcup Roaster Profile- Emeril’s

Have you noticed to ever-growing number of roasters offering their coffee in a Kcup? Big names from Starbucks to Folgers, Dunkin Donuts to Caribou are jumping on the Keurig Kcup coffee train.  This is great for you the consumer but,  poses the question of which to choose.

This weeks Keurig Kcup coffee roaster is Emeril’s.

emeril's big easy bold keurig kcup coffee

Emeril Lagasse is a world-famous chef from Massachusetts but, is better known for his residence in New Orleans.  Emeril was formally trained and polished as a professional chef in both the United States and France.  A master at classic French cuisine, he brought those skills back for us to enjoy in Boston, New York and Philadelphia before he headed to the big easy.

BAM!  When you think of Emeril you think strong, bold tastes. His recipes have a unique flare with a famous kick.  As you would guess he has applied these same principles to his coffee roasts.

Light roast?  Heck no!  Emerils Keurig Kcup coffees are extra bold, dark Parisian roasts.  Intense and full of flavor, these coffee’s are not for the faint at heart.  Currently, there are only two Emeril’s roasts available in single serve:

Big Easy Bold, this is one of our bestselling Kcups.  Every time we offer a sale price on this baby they sell out!

Emerils Big Easy Bold Keurig Kcup coffeeAnd Jazzed Up Decaf:

Jazzed up Decaf Keurig Kcup coffee

If you are a dark roast fan and yearn for complexity and depth in your coffee, Emeril’s is right up your alley!

To be simplistic, his coffee roasts pretty much taste exactly how you would think based on the fact that his tagline is BAM and he is a famous New Orleans chef : )

Emeril, if you are reading this… we need more varieties!

Keurig Kcup Roaster Profile- Tully’s Coffee

Have you noticed to ever-growing number of roasters offering their coffee in a Kcup? Big names from Starbucks to Folgers, Dunkin Donuts to Caribou are jumping on the Keurig Kcup coffee train.  This is great for you the consumer but,  poses the question of which to choose.

Keurig Kcups

I had a nice descriptive, professional post planned introducing you to one of our favorite Kcup coffee roasters Tully’s coffee.  But,  that all had to be changed… there is now a bigger story to tell.  Ladies, listen up. Not only does Tully’s coffee offer a high quality roast with a European flair but,  they are now owned by… wait for it…the one, the only, the mcdreamy- Patrick Dempsey!

patrick dempsey tullys coffeeMr. Dempsey was brave enough to face Starbucks head on in a bidding war for the smaller Tully’s coffee shops based in Seattle. Mcdreamy wisely noticed the huge potential in Tullys with their superior product.  I have read reports that he plans to spruce up the cafes, improve employee morale and update book-keeping process’.  When that is all up to his standards he plans to take Tullys national.

dempsey at tullysThis has proven that not only is Patrick handsome but he is apparently a savvy businessman. Tullys has the potential in my opinion to surpass even the most popular national coffee shops.  As I stated the coffee has a european flair, with depth and complexity.  What it does not have is the burnt taste that turns a lot of people away from Starbucks.

I  give Patrick and his company Global Baristas LLC kudos for saving thousands of jobs by rescuing Tullys from bankruptcy and demise.

dempsey at tullys 2 I am anxious to see what happens in the next year with Tullys coffee. Let’s hope for an expansion of roasts available in Kcups.  Currently there are four varieties of Tullys coffee available in single serve:

Tully Breakfast Blend Keurig Kcup coffee

Tullys French Roast Keurig Kcup coffee

Tullys House Blend Keurig Kcup coffee

Tullys Italian Roast Keurig Kcup coffee

Patrick,  if you are reading this we want more,  four is not enough! How about a Colombian and perhaps a Kona?  And your eyes are amazing. Love,  your biggest fan.

Keurig Kcup Roaster Profile- Caribou

Have you noticed to ever-growing number of roasters offering their coffee in a Kcup? Big names from Starbucks to Folgers, Dunkin Donuts to Caribou are jumping on the Keurig Kcup coffee train.  This is great for you the consumer but,  poses the question of which to choose.

Keurig Kcups

Up this week we are thrilled to introduce Caribou Coffee!  How cool is it that we get to partner with such a well-loved, expert in the coffee field.  A coffee celebrity of sorts.  With Caribou Keurig Kcup coffee you can enjoy famous coffee-house roasts in your own home at a fraction of the cost!

banner_brewyourbest_2012

Every year Caribou coffee travels the world to find the highest quality beans to bring home to you. Because of their size they are able to source beans that may not be available to small roasters or too limited in supply for a larger roaster.  Their mid size is just right. The Caribou roast masters take personal responsibility for what is in your cup.

Caribou has a program called “do good” which is their unique version of corporate responsibility. Do good consists of 3 area, sourcing, environment and community.  Sourcing of course includes the coffee itself but, Caribou takes it a step further and includes every product they touch, cups, napkins, dairy and store equipment. Environment is about partnering with Rainforest Alliance, recycling, water conservation, waste reduction and energy efficiency. Last but not least community, consisting of giving efforts raised through Amy’s Blend, donations to the internal nonprofit Caribou Cares, food donation program, and volunteer hours.

I am always pleased when a company creates a great product AND does is mind fully.  Caribou easily falls into this category.

Caribou was one of the front-runners joining the Keurig revolution several years ago.  There are several roasts available:

Caribou Mahogany Keurig Kcup coffee

Caribou Mahogany Keurig Kcup coffee

Caribou Daybreak Morning Blend Keurig Kcup coffee

Caribou Daybreak Morning Blend Keurig Kcup coffee

Caribou Colombia Keurig Kcup Coffee

Caribou Colombia Keurig Kcup Coffee

Caribou Blend Keurig Kcup coffee

Caribou Blend Keurig Kcup coffee

Caribou Blend decaf Keurig Kcup coffee

Caribou Blend decaf Keurig Kcup coffee

I have a philosophy with purchases… I truly believe that it is more cost efficient to go with a higher quality product that you know you are going to be pleased with rather than an off brand that might be ok.  We are all looking for a good deal,  I do it everyday but,  if you end up with second-rate product that you aren’t quite happy with it is such a waste.  Brands like Caribou may be slightly higher in cost than others,  but,  when you compare the quality to the renegade K-cups that you are finding on the market today (Grove Square) there is no competition.  Caribou is going to blow them away on taste, quality and corporate responsibility.  With Caribou and any Keurig endorsed K-cups you truly will get much  more bang for your buck!

Ok, I will get off my soap box now : )
