Keurig Kcup Review- Sweet Raspberry Iced Tea

Back by popular demand- Friday Kcup reviews! Every Friday at Cross Country Cafe we host a flavor review.  Let’s face it the selection of K-cups we have to choose from is huge,  how do you pick the right one?  Who wants to buy an entire box and not like it?! Our goal is to describe how the coffee or tea tastes in simple layman’s terms so that you can determine if it suits your preferences. Let’s get to the review, up this week…Celestial Seasonings Sweet Raspberry Iced Tea.

Sweet Raspberry Black Tea Brew Over Ice Keurig Kcups

Sweet Raspberry Black tea is a Brew Over Ice Keurig Kcup brought to us by Celestial Seasonings.

So many new Brew Over Ice Kcup varieties, such  little time…it has my head spinning.  I am madly in love with the Snapple Peach Tea and Green Mountain Lemonade but, there is always room for raspberry!

As always I brewed my Sweet Raspberry Black Tea on the lowest water setting of my Keurig.  There was already a slight hint of raspberry in the air but, I was also pleased to find that the aroma of black tea was  prevalent.  My fear with flavored teas and coffees is that the flavor takes over. So far that is not the case with this iced tea.

The appearance was perfect, not too light, not too dark.  Just perfectly in the middle. I headed to a water side dock to sit and enjoy my first sip in the sun…as it should be!

Raspberry Brew Over Ice Keurig Kcup tea

Raspberry Black tea is definitely sweet but, it is not overdone.  The overriding taste is deliciously refreshing iced black tea. It is reminiscent of unassuming Southern Sweet tea but rather than lemon it is enhanced with raspberry flavor.

At a mere 50 calories this makes a great treat on a summer afternoon.  In addition, Celestial Seasonings chose to use stevia (an all natural sugar substitute) rather than aspartame.

If you enjoy the taste of tea and prefer just a dab of sweetness in your beverages this is a perfect Kcup iced tea for you!

P.S. Out of simple curiosity I attempted to brew this Kcup hot, raspberry tea sounds pretty darn good, right?  Wrong.  It was not good…dont try it!

My Keurig Brewed a Half Cup- Now What?!

It’s 6am, you have had a solid 5 hours of sleep, you NEED coffee now.  You think to yourself, everything is going to be ok, my Keurig will have a steaming hot cup of joe in my mug in a mere 60 seconds.  You choose your favorite roast, pop ‘er in and…you hear sputtering, a little bit of coffee comes out then, nothing.

Need...Morning...Coffee...

This is probably the number one complaint I have heard when it comes to  Keurig performance and believe me, I get it.  But, with a little bit of know how, in most situations you can fix this issue.

If your Keurig brews a short cup it may be caused by one of the following:

  • The exit needle is clogged by coffee grounds, tea or cocoa mix. Click here to view instructions on how to clean the needle and brew basket.
  • It may be time to perform a descaling. Click here for instructions on how to descale your unit.
  • The water reservoir was removed during the brew process. Place the water reservoir back onto the brewer and perform a cleansing water only brew without a Kcup.
  • You may have a faulty brew basket (this actually happened to me). If your brewer is less than a year old, call Keurig and they will send you a brand spanking new one for free. If your unit is out if warranty, call us of course!

Those are the “on the record” instructions.

Off the record, hit the brewer.  Yep, pretend you are the Fonz and give it a little tap on the side. Air can get trapped in the tubing and prevent the coffee from exiting.  A little jiggle will move the air along and back to a brewin’ you will go!

I hope this helps! If I can help prevent one person from having to face a dreaded coffee less morning then my job here is done.

Keurig Kcup Coffee Recipe- Chocolate Coffee Milkshake

If you have been around awhile you have come to know (and hopefully love) our Monday K-cup coffee recipes.  I love fun, easy to make coffee drinks. They are a simple indulgence that can usually be made with ingredients already in your kitchen. There will be no running to the local coffee shop around here, no sir, we have Keurig’s in our kitchen that make these recipes easy peasy.

Up this week…Chocolate Coffee Milkshake.

Chocolate Coffee Milkshake

The two loves of my life come together in this little number, chocolate plus coffee make April a happy girl.

You will  need:

Chocolate Coffee Milkshake ingredients

1 C whole milk

3 scoops chocolate ice cream

1 dark roast Keurig Kcup coffee (I chose Barista Prima Italian Roast)

1-2 cups ice

Start by brewing your dark roast Keurig Kcup coffee on the lowest water setting of your brewer.  Place in fridge or ice bath to chill for at least 1 hour. Do not be tempted to add ice to cool it down, that will water it down too much and diminish the coffee flavor.

Here is the complicated part- plop it all in the blender and push on.

Done.

I did feel more chocolate was necessary (isn’t it always) so I added 1 T of cocoa powder and it was perfect! This is a delicious, easy to make summer treat that I am quite sure will become a regular in my home!

Coffee and Dessert Pairings

We have enjoyed sharing our Monday coffee recipes so much that we have decided to expand our horizons with a new once a month series of dessert recipes! But, these aren’t just any old desserts. We have hand selected easy to prepare, simple recipes that pair well with, you guessed it…Kcup coffee! Not only will we include a delicious dessert recipe but, we will suggest a Keurig Kcup coffee to enjoy with it for optimal taste!

With out further ado please welcome our first amazing dessert…Apple Cream Cheese Crescents:

Apple Cream Cheese Crescent Recipe

Isn’t she beautiful?! This little baby is so easy to make with BIG taste results.  Perfect to whip up for the last-minute guest or a Sunday morning treat.

You will need:

  • 1 container of refrigerated crescent rolls
  • 1/8 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/8 cup applesauce
  • Butterscotch Chips (optional)

Remove the crescent rolls from the container and separate into individual pieces of dough triangles.

Soften the cream cheese in the microwave so it is east to spread.

Place a very small drop of cream cheese and applesauce (about 1 teaspoon or less of each) on the large end of each crescent roll triangle. Roll up towards the small end, shape, and place on a greased cookie sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

If desired, melt the butterscotch chips and drizzle over the finished product.

How easy is that? No baking skill required here!

There are quite a few taste combinations involved in Apple Cream Cheese Crescents all coming together in a perfect marriage. For that reason, we would suggest a traditional roast coffee rather than a flavored.  Why try to top perfection by adding yet another dimension to the mix.  Stick with a medium roast, non flavored coffee and your taste buds will thank you.

We recommend Wolfgang Puck Breakfast in Bed Keurig Kcup coffee to pair with this delectable crescent.

Keurig Kcup Coffee Review- Newman’s Special Blend

Back by popular demand- Friday Kcup reviews! Every Friday at Cross Country Cafe we host a flavor review.  Let’s face it the selection of K-cups we have to choose from is huge,  how do you pick the right one?  Who wants to buy an entire box and not like it?! Our goal is to describe how the coffee or tea tastes in simple layman’s terms so that you can determine if it suits your preferences. Let’s get to the review, up this week…Newman’s Own Special Blend.

Newman's Special Blend Keurig Kcup coffee

Newman’s Special Blend is a medium roast, extra bold Keurig Kcup coffee brought to us by the authority on organic foods…Newman’s Own. In addition to being organic this coffee is also Fair Trade certified.

I chose to review Special Blend this week for purely selfish reasons. My latest quest in self improvement is to introduce organic products into our household. Let me start from the beginning.  I have had an inner turmoil for years regarding the source, ingredients and processes involved in creating my food and beverage choices.

By inner turmoil I mean, I am cheap.

There are no if’s, and’s or but’s about it, organic goods are much more expensive than “regular” items. But, lately I have been thinking isn’t the health of the environment, myself and my family worth a few extra bucks? That is a conversation for a different day because, good news…Newman’s Special Blend is priced the same as it’s main stream counterparts! This left  me with high hopes of adding an organic coffee to my repertoire.

I chose to brew this Kcup on the highest water setting of my Keurig.  Being an extra bold coffee, I felt that it would be able to hold up well to the higher amount of water.

The result was a really nice, dark coffee with no translucency just begging for a dash of cream!

Newman's Special Blend extra bold, medium roast Keurig Kcup coffee

As you would guess from the beautiful appearance of this coffee, the body is smooth and creamy. There is a bit of a tangy taste with the first sip that finishes nicely on the back the tongue adding an interesting dimension.  Earthy is a term that comes to mind.  Despite being a medium roast, there is a slight hint of the famous burnt taste associated with a darker roast…but, just a hint, not enough to turn a medium roast drinker away. Newman’s is a heavy, satisfying coffee.

Little do you know,  you have probably enjoyed a cup or two of this roast without even realizing it.  Newman’s is the exclusive coffee supplier of all Mcdonald’s restaurants!

I would highly recommend this organic Kcup coffee to medium and dark roast drinkers. If light roast and flavored coffees are your preference, this is probably not the one for you.

P.S. Brew this over ice for a Mcdonalds iced coffee at home!
